The biggest canvas I've painted in nature measures 200x300cms. I worked on it at dawn every fine morning from May to September over four years. On alternate days I painted the left or right hand side because the canvas was so large it obscured the landscape. Working large in nature is very exhilarating, especially on windy days, but the problems involved limit the possibilities of expression and place. For the past few years I've made most of my very large paintings in my studio working from a selection of pastels, drawings and small oils done on the motif. At some stage I abandon these supports and usually finish the painting in an almost entirely abstract way, often working for days with the canvas upside down or on it's side.
